“Edo Sato Kagura” (Shrine Music & Dance) Project: Intensive Workshops and Upcoming Show!

Suzuki 2011_NATC 21Revered master of Edo Sato Kagura (Japanese shrine dance and music), Kyosuke Suzuki of the Wakayama Shachu of Tokyo, comes to Honolulu for Taiko Center of the Pacific’s Summer Taiko Intensives (STI): August 28 – September 1. Wakayama Shachu has been deemed an “Intangible Cultural Art” by the Japanese Ministry of Culture.

Intensive workshops offered by Suzuki include “Kagura Shrine Dance Movements,” “Yokobue” (Japanese transverse bamboo flute), and “Shimedaiko” (small rope-lashed drum as in Edo Bayashi, festival music of old Tokyo). Other courses offered in the Summer Taiko Intensive include: Beta Chudaiko, Korean Changgo Hourglass Drum and Japanese Festival Music.

On September 2, he will offer an educational outreach program “An Evening of Edo Sato Kagura – Shrine Music and Dance of Old Tokyo” at the Izumo Taishakyo Mission.
